Stiltsville – Old Florida on the Bay

Barefoot Miami boys fix this hut.

Boating out to the Stiltsville wood cabin Memorial Day 2017 brought me to Old Florida. This is the Florida of green misty water legends.

Wikipedia gives the location and drier aspects of Stiltsville history.

As the Barefoot Boys of Miami have shared, it was a wild location back in the day when the cabin huts were bawdy and hosting off shore gambling. Bordellos alighted the shimmery green waters. Seafaring sailors and other folk had no farther to go than south Miami for their pleasures.

Cormorants live there year round. Flocked so closely that their poop slicked the deck and stank, we held our noses while chasing them off the boat hook level. The shack we visited was painted in Old Florida happy colors: peridot greens, turquoise blues and blanched whites.

The captain planted the American flag as soon as we arrived.
