Fishing Follies

Fishing for dates on Plenty of Fish is this mermaid’s fishing folly. What started as a scary watery world has become a game of catch and toss. Toss is most of it. I have zero advice on how to find dates. What I do find is how much I like to taunt the men who clearly hate women by their expectations of perfection. That’s called “Mermaid Fun”… lash the tail…lash the tail!

The photos alone are a rude entry into the  strange-mouth brass fish.

At first, I felt intimidated by the process of “cold calls”. Then after some pitiful reactions, I realized this is a game for me. I get to reinvent myself each time I play. So it’s not as much to answer their questions as it is for me to rediscover myself.

Some of the tricks I’ve learned from others who have been on dating sites:

  1. don’t give out your real name at first and for sure not on the website
  2. don’t give out your phone number
  3. don’t believe anything the guys say
  4. when you choose to call, let them give their cell and dial a blocking number for you. Mine is *67.

At the starting gate, I found a handsome man’s photo and he emailed me quickly and shortly afterwards, shamelessly got lost in Indochina on an art and antique purchasing trip. He had no problem asking me for $1,500. I got him shamelessly lost too.

Then the Danish guy who suddenly found himself in Malaysia and needed me to buy him a smartphone so we could see each other in Facetime. I diet from Danish now.

Or the widower who listed being American and his accent was undiscernable. When I ended the emailing, he text hollared, “I KNEW YOU DIDN”T LOVE ME”. I hated to make him twice right by agreeing.

My favorites are when they suddenly declare open undying love for me. After one email. That adorable, I am not.

Or how about those questionnaires: “I’d like to know you…so tell me your likes, dislikes….” and then the pontificating about the nature of love and relationships…endlessly…where on Google did they find this script?

Recent ridiculous ones are where I write and say I’m not into writing so send me a number and arrange a time to call so they know to expect the call. This recent week’s toss-loss was how he really tried to manipulate me to giving him my cell out of frustration that he wouldn’t pick up. He did not pick up purposely so I’d cave in and share my real number. I called Twice…three times…and finally I announced to him he’s not interested so I’m not pursuing. He made it very clear it was my fault because I wouldn’t give him my number. This is one who swore he was a christian and had so much respect for women. Well…that ain’t my Jesus…so  the Fisherman had me throw that stinker back.

Why continue? There are success stories from people I trust so I’m willing to cast my line.
