Child’s 4th

This adult was wielding a huge drill to bore a hole in a watermelon to blow it up. Every child would love to see an adult do this silliness. And the child next to this adult did. He also got the treat of picking up the guts of the watermelon to toss into the canal.

Quick sketching is a very specific artistic training. My timing is totally off and my skills are sadly slow. The only way to improve is to ‘do’. It’s embarrassing when people come and look at my work while it’s not perfect. But that’s the process of perfecting: keep going and don’t give up. The memory-hand-brain connection will improve.

The purpose of Quick Sketching is to capture the zen of action. Some photographers can do that but rarely can artists. It’s a specific skill that requires time and training. And dedication…if I’m not doing it daily, I lose what I gained in previous days’ practices.

In growing up, most of my friends and families have seen me with a sketchpad on my lap. It’s like cigarette smoking…I need to keep my hands busy. Perhaps I’m ADD…Attention Deficit Disorder…or more likely, Art Drawing Dedicated. All around me were having shots of alcohol: I can’t drink and drive so I don’t partake. I draw.

It was a gorgeous, silly, family-oriented 4th of July and I’m grateful to the persons I celebrated with.
